It always amuses me that people have an issue with F2P, IAP’s etc. We all like the idea of paying once, we all don’t like to be bothered to have to keep paying to enjoy a game, yes if done badly it’s bloody annoying! but what people who flat-out can’t live with IAP seem to forget is that games which require post-launch on-going continual development require some form of on-going continual payment model, this can either be subscription, IAP’s or DLC. What it cannot be is a one off payment up front unless you want that to be a $1000+.
Of all the above options, IAP gives you the most choice as you are continuing to play the game. With subscription, if you don’t pay that’s it, game over, with DLC if you don’t buy it, and everyone else does then you are left playing on your own.
IAP done properly will allow the player to continue to play even if they don’t pay out anything, but just in some kind of reduced form unless they are willing to put the extra time/effort into the game to make up for the fact they are not paying. And if they are not willing to pay and/or put the extra time/effort into the game to get the rewards in gameplay out then why are they playing it in the first place?
